With the release of Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch at the end of last year, 2019 has brought with it a renewed interest in interactive film/TV — that is, video content that invites audience participation in the progression of the narrative. And while Bandersnatch is probably the most visible contemporary example of interactive filmmaking to date, the mechanic is fairly simplistic – tasking viewers with choosing between two options at any given moment by clicking with mouse or remote.

But when Armen Perian set out to create his interactive film, The Angry River, he wanted the technology to disappear, leaving audiences with a traditional viewing experience that is anything but.
